Over the past three months, ARC staff and dedicated volunteers have been instrumental in strengthening links between partners and the public. ARC’s efforts have concentrated on delivering expert advice, advancing herpetological education, and showcasing a diverse range of engaging resources for early years to undergraduates. Shane Gausden, ARC’s Enquiries and Communications Officer, emphasized the importance of our summer outreach efforts: “ARC fields approximately 1100 enquiries annually, many of which are from the public seeking to identify amphibians and reptiles they encounter in their gardens or in their green spaces. Our activities this summer have been crucial in raising awareness within communities about our native species” From exclusive events to expansive county shows spanning several days, ARC staff and volunteers have been at the forefront of these events. This year, we proudly supported a wider range of environmental NGO partners, including zoos and visitor centres. Notably, we participated in zoo open days at Chester, Banham, Isle of Wight and Hertfordshire, as well as working with Forestry England to staff the New Forest Reptile Centre near Lyndhurst, offering visitors the unique opportunity to interact live with our staff and see animals. In addition to these engaging encounters, we’ve introduced a renewed focus on junior science education at our public events. Our interactive activities for young audiences have been a standout feature, sparking interest in the next generation of environmental stewards. By presenting fun and educational content about amphibians and reptiles, we aim to inspire young minds and foster a lasting passion for science and conservation. Furthermore, our collaboration with over 60 eNGOs has strengthened our advocacy for enhanced environmental protections. This partnership has not only increased our visibility but also expanded the reach of our educational resources, benefiting both communities and herpetology (study of amphibians and reptiles) enthusiasts. As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to engaging, educating, and advocating for the amphibians and reptiles we hold dear while supporting the Government’s ambitious 30x30 goal. Addressing the pressing environmental challenges facing these species and their habitats continues to be a priority for us. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our volunteers and partners for their crucial contributions, which have made this summer a resounding success.
